Rep. Wilhour’s 3rd Annual Free Fishing Derby on June 21

Louisville, IL – State Representative Blaine Wilhour (R-Beecher City) announced today that his 2025 Fishing Derby for children ages 4 to 15 will be held this year at the Carlyle Lake – Willow Pond located in Carlyle, IL. This FREE Fishing Derby begins at 8:30 a.m. with a presentation on water safety and will conclude at 11:00 a.m. with the awarding of prizes for the biggest fish and most fish caught that morning.

“This event has become a very popular activity for families looking to enjoy the resources we have right here in our area,” commented Wilhour. “We have parents and grandparents bringing the kids out to get them away from all of the computers, televisions, and video games and enjoy the fresh air.”

Wilhour confirmed that local radio personality Al Crocker will be joining the event again this year to help teach new and younger kids how to bait a hook and reel in a fish. Mr. Crocker is a local fishing expert in Illinois who hosts a weekly radio show called “Fishing and the Outdoors,” that provides fishing reports, tips, and information about the 13 lakes in Southwestern Illinois, specifically focusing on Carlyle Lake.

Everyone should meet at the Carlyle Lake Visitor Center located at 801 Lake Road in Carlyle to check in at 8:30 a.m. The fishing derby is held in conjunction with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Participants are asked to bring a rod & reel. The bait will be provided by Rep. Wilhour. A few fishing poles will be provided for use by the IDNR. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

“The sport of fishing has been growing for several years and many high schools and colleges in our area have fishing teams,” added Wilhour. “Congratulations to the Wabash Valley College Bass Team for finishing 6th in the Nation for the 2024-25 season with the Association of Collegiate Anglers.”
