The No. 20 seed Kaskaskia College Blue Devils upset the No. 13 seed Sheridan Generals (92 to 80) Monday evening in Hutchison, Kansas at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament. As reported by the Hutchison News, the Blue Devils made more 3-pointers and free throws to overcome the higher seeded Sheridan team from Wyoming in a first-round victory in Game 5 on Monday.
The Blue Devils (24-10) went 11 of 19 for 58 percent from behind the arc and knocked down 19 of 21 free throws (91 percent) to pull off an upset of the Generals (31-4). Sheridan went 6 of 20 for 30 percent from the 3-point line and struggled at the free-throw line, where it went 8 of 21 for 38 percent.
Parker Dotch (21 points) led five Kaskaskia starters in double-figure scoring, including Garrett Belcher (19), Thomas Bell (19), Jamal Thomas (12) and Quin Nottingham (10). Dortch was 5 of 5 from 3-point range in a 7 of 9 effort from the field overall. Belcher and Bell combined to make 14 of 27 field goals inside.
Kaskaskia advanced to play No. 4 seed Coffeyville (KS) Community College (29-3) in the second round at 12 p.m. Wednesday.
